The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 12th year, connects more than 90 of the world’s
greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world
together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable
and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 650 million urban citizens and their economies
account for 25% of global GDP. Our recent ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s
major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.
C40’s growing team of 100+ staff is headquartered in London, with offices in New York, Rio de Janeiro,
Copenhagen, Beiiing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 has an
operating budget of c.$25m per year and is primarily funded through the generous support of
The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors,
which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R.
Bloomberg serves as President of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. A
seven person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day
management of C40.
C40 Initiatives and Networks
Working across multiple sectors and issues, C40 convenes networks that provide a range of services in
support of cities’ climate change efforts. C40 also positions cities as a leading force for climate action
around the world, defining and amplifying their call to national governments for greater support and
autonomy in creating a sustainable future.
C40 networks help cities replicate, improve and accelerate climate action. These city-only working groups
provide for honest knowledge exchange, enabling cities to tap into the global expertise of their peers as
well as connect with technical partners. C40 networks also amplify individual city solutions by providing a
global platform for showcasing city successes. The result is that cities' climate actions to reduce GHGs and
climate risks are bolder, more impactful, implemented faster, at a lower cost and with less resources than
if they were to go it alone. No other organisation facilitates such deep connections amongst city staff
across 50+ countries, 20 time zones and 26 languages to accelerate local action with major global impact.
C40 Data Analysis
C40 performs cutting edge analysis on urban sustainability and serves as the leading authority on the
impact that the world’s cities have on global climate change. City intelligence supports the knowledge
exchange between cities by providing technical support, developing guidance and protocols and by
C40.SOP/HR/001 F2 2
encouraging transparency through robust reporting.
In order for data to be meaningful, it must be actionable. C40 has unique access to comprehensive data on
cities and undertakes analysis that contributes significant understanding of how city governments deliver
emission reductions and climate resilience.
The Building Energy Data Analyst will be passionate about the power of data to support cities deliver
ambitious action on climate change. As well as strong data analysis skills the Analyst will also be aware of
the need to make data actionable through clear analysis and communication.
They will work across a diverse range of C40 cities, from the most advanced, leading cities with a large
volume, variety and frequency of data on their private and municipal owned buildings, to those who are
just starting to plan how and what data to collect. Working alongside a world-leading building energy data
contractor the Analyst will deliver research projects across multiple cities and one-to-one consultancy to
individual cities to support the city undertake cutting edge analysis on any aspect of city building energy
data from improving data quality to collection, cleansing, analysis or visualisation – all of which will drive
real change in cities.
The Building Energy Data Analyst will join a team of dynamic C40 staff and will be a key resource to
support the Private Building Efficiency and Municipal Building Efficiency Network Managers in providing
technical analysis and support for C40 cities in those networks. The Analyst will be responsible for
ensuring results and lessons learned from one-to-one work with cities are communicated back to a larger
network of cities and strengthening city connections on building energy data.
They will work closely to collaborate and utilise data and research collected or undertaken by other teams
internally, as well as externally through partner organisations.
The responsibilities of the role include:
• Use own knowledge, experience and initiative to undertake data analysis and manipulation to provide
solutions across all aspects of building energy data-driven city initiatives.
• Perform spreadsheet based analysis on city building energy datasets to identify potential energy
savings opportunities for projects and policy development, and to support cities manage, analyse and
apply findings from their data.
• Work closely with and build friendly, long term relationships with consultants and delivery partners,
potentially based overseas, to deliver multiple city research and city-specific technical assistance, that
demonstrates the qualities of excellence and professionalism expected by C40.
• Effectively and clearly communicate findings through virtual means (webinars and calls) as well as
visualisations and written reports for multiple audiences who will often be non-technical.
• Collaborate on internal data-related projects with other teams.
• Manage several individual but related data projects, with a balance of smaller shorter term and larger
long term projects.
• Serve as the technical building energy data knowledge hub for the Energy Initiative.
• Relevant educational qualification (BSc minimum) required in an appropriate data science,
environmental management or engineering discipline;
• Experience of data analysis or data management with strong Exce
