Groundwater and Contaminated Land Technical Officer

Job description
This is an opportunity for a new graduate to contribute to protecting the vulnerable groundwater resource in Kent and South London. You’ll be helped to develop within a busy team delivering specialist technical advice and guidance on hydro-geological and land contamination matters.

Our team deals with planning consultations, often on high profile infrastructure and developments, and provides advice and regulation on voluntary remediation at contaminated sites. Additionally, we provide expert knowledge to support environmental permits across a wide range of areas including water discharges, oil and gas developments, landfills and waste sites. We also carry out a valuable role in protecting and improving groundwater quality by designing and implementing strategies to support our sensitive groundwater areas. We work closely with members of the public, business, agriculture, water companies and industry to achieve this.

You’ll support this work by assessing technical information such as site investigation data, soil and groundwater remediation verification reports and groundwater risk assessments under the guidance of senior staff. You'll help respond to customer enquiries and information requests, and develop relationships with other departments. The team support The Environment Agency’s response to pollution and flooding incidents, and you will have opportunities to train in an incident role.
The team
The Groundwater and Contaminated Land Team are based in Addington near West Malling, regulating and protecting the heavily utilised groundwater resource in the Kent and South London area of the South East.

You'll join a team of specialists in land contamination, landfill engineering, groundwater protection, and hydrogeology. Our technical advice is indispensable to other Environment Agency teams in making decisions regarding building and infrastructure developments, incident management, and permitting.
Experience/skills required
• You must be qualified to degree level in a relevant geoscience discipline such as geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry or land quality.
• Relevant experience and/or a post graduate qualification may be useful.
• You'll be a good communicator and should be able to present verbal and written reports to a range of audiences, with the ability to turn technical detail into understandable language.
• You should be able to manage your own time within a busy team.
• You should be able to work with and interpret data to solve technical issues.
• You should be able to work well as part of a team and with external customers.
• You’ll have good computer skills with the ability to make use of IT tools available including GIS and MS Office.
• We will support you to work towards Chartered status.
• Full UK Driving Licence required.

Full UK driving licence
