May Walters is a boutique search consultancy specialising in senior positions within the environment and engineering sector.

The Client

An opportunity has arisen with our client, to acquire a individual to perform a senior role within the business and develop and lead the Rail Practice.

Our client is a rapidly expanding multidisciplinary engineering lead consultancy.

Established from an MBO just over 10 years ago, they employed 15 people working from a single site, today they now employ just over 250 staff, operating from 8 UK offices and during this time they have grown their turnover from £1 million to £18 million today.

Our client specialises in delivery of civil and structural engineering, building services and geo-environmental consulting services, to the market sectors of residential, commercial and infrastructure. Over the last 10 years they have grown via targeted acquisition of niche consultancies, who have robust client relationships and who employ credible engineers. Their offices now cover the UK from London through to Scotland. A recent substantial investment by a equity partner has enabled the 3 year business plan to include options for more acquisitions in addition to hiring individuals key individuals within the market, to ensure each service line is represented across the UK such that the forecast for growth for next year is to double the current turnover.

There is a focus on development of the infrastructure sector within the business plan. Within the rail sector, currently most of their established clients fall within the north of the UK and much of their current business is regionalised in this area. There is a desire to capitalise on the current in house resources and clients to develop this business and increase the traction within the rail sector. The successful individual would play a leading role in developing and delivering this business and leading the practice.


The role is a management role with dual technical and business development responsibilities within the organisation.

Responsibilities would include;

Identify suitable projects at an early stage and outline appropriate solutions

Review tender documents offering guidance regards technical elements

Contribute to the technical design and price schedules of bids, ensuring risks are mitigated

Follow the tender process through, liaising and educating clients and staff appropriately

Support the delivery teams, verifying work at all stages of the project

Contributing to the strategic business plan in developing the company growth

Manage, motivate and recruit within the team where appropriate

Attend networking events and develop relationships with clients

The regional UK offices are based the Manchester, Glasgow in Birmingham and near Leeds.

The Individual

The successful candidate would be based within the regions of the Midlands, or in the North / Scotland.

They would be expected to be enthusiastic and have the drive and desire to grow the business.

A track record of delivering and developing the rail sector is a pre-requisite

Technical knowledge would ideally be engineering, however individuals with building services, environmental or other relevant backgrounds would be considered

In return, a competitive package will be offered.

A salary including benefits would be provided which would be in line with the industry.

In addition an equity vehicle could be included.
